OVERVIEW
GENERAL ENGLISH COURSE focuses on real everyday English for communication. This course builds your confidence and develops your skills to function in an English-speaking country. Apart from developing core skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), this course provides students with pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar support.
AIL offers four levels of General English from Elementary (CEFR A2 Level) to Upper-intermediate (CEFR B2 Level). General English students are required to undertake a placement test to determine their entry point.

CORE TEXTBOOK
Every student having their own copy of the core textbook is essential to their learning journey. AIL has chosen Empower English (2nd Edition) as the core textbook for its General English classes because it provides the perfect balance of language development, real-world communication, and learner engagement. Developed by Cambridge University Press, the series features practical topics, authentic content, and personalised learning pathways supported by rich online resources. Its clear structure and CEFR alignment enable students to monitor their progress effectively while building confidence and fluency in everyday English.
BEYOND TEXTBOOK
A good English teacher never focuses solely on textbooks, and a lively General English class should always go beyond them. At AIL, our General English teachers create dynamic and interactive lessons that combine real-life communication with engaging in-class activities — such as role plays, pair conversations, group discussions, show and share, listening tasks, and creative writing exercises. These activities help students apply what they learn in practical ways, building confidence and fluency in both spoken and written English.
Learning at AIL also extends beyond the classroom. Our General English program includes regular excursions and cultural experiences that connect language learning with everyday life in Melbourne. AIL’s General English course (CRICOS 109422F) is a CRICOS-registered ELICOS course that builds everyday English across listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, from beginner to advanced.
- What is the AIL General English course?
The AIL General English course is a CRICOS-registered English language program designed to help international students develop practical, everyday English communication skills for daily life, work, travel, and future study in Australia. The course focuses on building confidence through a balanced approach to listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
- Who is General English for?
The AIL General English course is designed for adult learners (18 years and over) who want to improve their English for everyday communication, work, travel, or further study. It caters to students from Elementary (CEFR A2) through to Upper-Intermediate (CEFR B2), with a placement test used to determine the most suitable starting level.
- What levels are offered?
AIL’s General English course offers four CEFR-aligned levels, allowing students to progress from Elementary (A2) to Upper-intermediate (B2) English proficiency. Students complete a placement test before commencing to ensure they are enrolled in the level that best matches their current English ability.
- How long is the course?
The AIL General English course is flexible, allowing students to study for 2 weeks up to 40 weeks, depending on their English level and learning goals.
- Is there a placement test before course enrolment?
Yes. Students are required to complete a placement test before starting the course. Based on the results, they are placed into the most appropriate level and can progress through the program as they improve their English. Each level takes 10 weeks to complete, with the full program lasting up to 40 weeks.
- How many hours of class per week?
AIL General English is delivered 20 hours per week through face-to-face classroom instruction. Students can choose from day or evening classes, depending on availability and their study preferences.
- Do I need an English test to enrol?
No. You do not need to provide an official English test result (such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE) to enrol in the AIL General English course. Students who already have an English test result may provide it as supporting information, but it is not a compulsory entry requirement for General English enrolment.
- Can General English lead to other courses?
AIL General English provides students with a pathway to higher-level English programs, including English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and the IELTS Test Preparation Course at AIL.
Students may also progress to AIL’s nationally recognised interpreting and translating qualifications, including PSP50922 Diploma of Interpreting and PSP60822 Advanced Diploma of Translating, subject to meeting the relevant entry requirements.
In addition, AIL has established pathway options with Victorian TAFEs, including Box Hill Institute and Holmesglen TAFE, providing students with further opportunities for vocational and academic study in Australia.

- When can I start the AIL General English course and where is it delivered?
AIL General English offers flexible intake dates throughout the year, with classes commencing every Monday. Students can choose their preferred start date and complete an English placement test before commencement to determine the most suitable class level.

- Under what visa can I study AIL General English?
AIL General English is available to students under various visa types, including:
Student Visa (Subclass 500) – for students undertaking full-time English study in Australia.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) – for short-term English study (subject to visa conditions).
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417/462) – for eligible working holiday makers.
Other visa holders may also be eligible depending on their visa conditions. For visa advice, please consult a registered migration agent.
- Where are students from in AIL’s General English class?
AIL General English attracts students from 40 countries and regions around the world, including Asia, Latin America, Europe, and other parts of the world, creating a diverse and multicultural learning environment.
This diverse classroom environment allows students to practise English with people from different cultural backgrounds and develop confidence in real-life communication.
- Do I receive a certificate after completing the AIL General English course?
Yes. Students who successfully complete their AIL General English course will receive a Course Attendance Certificate. Students who complete a full level of study will receive a Course Completion Certificate indicating their English level and period of study.
The certificate recognises students’ achievement and can be used as evidence of their English language study at AIL.
- Does AIL provide accommodation for General English students?
No. AIL does not provide on-campus accommodation for General English students. However, AIL partners with AHN and OZiHOUSE to provide homestay and accommodation options for students.
Students may also arrange their own accommodation based on their personal preferences and needs.
- Is there a course attendance requirement?
Yes. For international students, a minimum 80% course attendance is required. AIL strictly follows industry regulations and monitors student attendance throughout the course.
Students with unsatisfactory attendance will receive warnings. The Director of Studies or Academic Manager may meet with students who have poor attendance to discuss the reasons and develop an improvement plan.
Students on a Student Visa (Subclass 500) who fail to meet attendance requirements may be reported to the Department of Home Affairs, which may impact their student visa status.
