OVERVIEW
ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES COURSE is aimed at preparing students for studying in an Academic context such as TAFEs or universities. Students work on all skills, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking equally, in addition, study their Academic counterparts, such as presentations, critical thinking, lecture note-taking, referencing, listening to lectures, reading academic texts, and looking at cultural differences when studying in a tertiary course in Australia.
AIL’s EAP program offers two levels: Upper-Intermediate (CEFR B2) and Advanced (CEFR C1). All students are required to complete a placement test to determine the appropriate entry level.

CORE TEXTBOOK
With the rapid changes happening in the world every day, regular course review, textbook updates, and curriculum upgrades are essential to help students meet their learning goals and achieve success.
In July 2025, the AIL Academic Team partnered with Cambridge University Press to adopt the Unlock 3rd Edition as the core textbook for AIL’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. This makes AIL the first institution to implement this new series.
Unlock is a six-level paired skills English course designed to develop students’ critical thinking, academic, and language skills.
BEYOND TEXTBOOK
A good English teacher never focuses solely on textbooks, and a fun English class should always go beyond textbook. At AIL, our EAP teachers prepare a wide variety of engaging in-class activities — such as show and share, open discussions, pair debates, group presentations, and individual essays — to ensure students apply what they learn and improve both their spoken and written English effectively and naturally.
Beyond the classroom, AIL’s EAP program also organises outdoor excursions that connect with weekly topics and extend learning into real-life contexts. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in places such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, NGV exhibitions, ACMI shows, and more — learning English through experience, exploring Melbourne’s rich cultural diversity, and seeing the language come alive.

The EAP pathway English course helped me through to my university studies!!
I took 10 weeks EAP English class at Australian Institute of Language. The school is right in the heart of Melbourne CBD, close to GPO, Emporium, restaurants and local cafes. The staff and teachers here are very nice and experienced, classmates are from all over the world, and the school has a computer lab and self-study area that I can spend some extra time on my study. After 10 weeks of study, I successfully passed all tests and assessments and go through to my next chapter of study.

- What levels are offered in AIL EAP?
AIL EAP is offered at two levels to support students with different academic English abilities:

Advanced Level (CEFR C1) – designed for students who need to develop advanced academic English skills and prepare for the demands of higher education in Australia.

- How long is the AIL EAP course?
The duration of the AIL EAP course depends on the student’s entry level and learning goals.
Students can choose a suitable study duration up to 20 weeks based on their English proficiency, academic pathway requirements, and future study plans.
- Do I need an English test to enrol?
No. Students do not need to provide an official English test result to enrol in AIL EAP.
Students complete an AIL English placement test before starting the course to assess their English level and determine the appropriate class placement.
Students who already have an IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or other English test result may provide it as supporting information.
- Can I progress from EAP to AIL VET courses?
Yes. After completing EAP and meeting the relevant entry requirements, students may progress to AIL’s nationally recognised qualifications, including:

- Can AIL EAP help me enter TAFE or university?

- Under what visa can I study AIL EAP?
AIL EAP is available to students under various visa types, including:
Student Visa (Subclass 500) – for students undertaking full-time English study in Australia.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) – for short-term English study (subject to visa conditions).
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417/462) – for eligible working holiday makers.
Students should check their visa conditions before enrolling.
- Where are students from in AIL EAP classes?
AIL EAP attracts students from 40 countries and regions around the world, including Asia, Latin America, Europe, and other regions.
The multicultural classroom environment allows students to communicate with classmates from different cultural backgrounds and develop confidence using English in academic and social situations.
- Does AIL provide accommodation for EAP students?
No. AIL does not provide on-campus accommodation for EAP students.
However, AIL partners with AHN and OZiHOUSE to provide homestay and accommodation options.
Students may also arrange their own accommodation based on their preferences and needs.
- Do I receive a certificate after completing AIL EAP?
Yes. Students who successfully complete their AIL EAP course will receive a Course Attendance Certificate.
Students who complete a full level of study will receive a Course Completion Certificate indicating their English level and period of study.
- Is there a course attendance requirement?
Yes. International students are required to maintain a minimum 80% course attendance.
AIL strictly follows Australian education industry regulations and monitors student attendance throughout the course.
Students with unsatisfactory attendance will receive warnings. The Director of Studies or Academic Manager may meet with students to discuss attendance issues and develop an improvement plan.
Students on a Student Visa who fail to meet attendance requirements may be reported to the Department of Home Affairs, which may impact their visa status.
