    OVERVIEW

     The High School Preparation (HSP) course has been developed to address the increasing demand from international students and their families for structured English language support before entering Australian high schools. The course is designed to support international students in developing the linguistic, academic, and social skills necessary for success in an Australian high school setting. The program integrates English language learning with subject-specific content to ensure students are well-prepared for mainstream classes.

    Established in 2012, Australian Institute of Language (AIL) is one of Australia’s most enduring providers of English language training and testing.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    The HSP course aims to:

    Academic English Development: The course focuses on improving students’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, particularly in an academic context.

    Subject-Specific Language Skills: The program includes English for Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and IT to familiarise students with subject-specific vocabulary and discourse.

    Study Skills and Critical Thinking: Students develop essential study habits such as notetaking, summarising, and critical analysis to facilitate independent learning.

    Cultural Awareness and Integration: The curriculum includes Australian school culture, classroom etiquette, and peer interaction skills to help students adjust to their new learning environment.

    COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

    The HSP course is structured to ensure students gain the required skills to integrate seamlessly into Australian high schools. The program follows a well-balanced curriculum that includes:

    Core English Language Instruction: Focuses on grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills.

    Academic Writing and Reading: Develops essay writing, comprehension, and research skills.

    Subject-Specific Learning Modules: Covers English for Mathematics, Science, and Humanities to familiarise students with subject expectations.

    Study and Exam Skills: Prepares students for assessments with revision techniques, time management, and effective study habits.

    Social and cultural integration: helps young students improve their social and interpersonal skills interactive classroom activities, group projects, and guided peer collaboration.

    In the AIL High School Preparation (HSP) course, time is carefully allocated to each subject area to ensure balanced development of academic English, subject-specific knowledge, and essential study skills. While exact hours may vary slightly depending on student level and program structure, a typical weekly schedule includes:

    Core English (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking):

    17 hours per week

    Focuses on academic English development, including grammar, vocabulary, essay writing, and comprehension.

    English for Mathematics:

    2 hours per week

    Builds subject-specific language skills needed to understand and solve mathematical problems.

    English for Science:

    2 hours per week

    Introduces scientific language, report writing, and comprehension of science-related texts and experiments.

    Humanities-related Studies (e.g., History, Geography, Civics):

    2 hours per week

    Develops analytical thinking, reading comprehension, and the ability to express and support opinions.

    Physical Education (PE):

    1 hours per week

    Supports physical well-being and helps students adapt to group interaction and instruction in English.

    Study Skills & Critical Thinking Workshops:

    1 hours per week

    Covers time management, research, exam techniques, and reflection to build independent learning habits.

    Entry requirements:

    The High School Preparation (HSP) course is designed for international students who intend to transition into Australian high schools. The entry prerequisites for this course are outlined below to ensure that students meet the necessary language proficiency, education level, and age requirements for successful participation.

    English Language Entry Requirements

    Applicants are not required to provide an official English proficiency test score, as the HSP course accommodates students from Starter to Upper-intermediate levels. However, if students have an existing English test score, such as:

    • AEAS Test
    • IELTS Academic
    • TOEFL iBT
    • TOEFL Junior

    They are encouraged to submit their results for reference. If no test results are available, students will be required to complete an internal English placement test upon enrolment. This test will assess their English proficiency across reading, writing, listening, and speaking to determine the most suitable entry level within the HSP course.

    Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must have completed a minimum of:

    • Year 7 or equivalent in their home country.

    Students should demonstrate foundational academic skills and the ability to engage in structured learning environments.

     Age Requirement

    The HSP course is designed for students aged:

    • 12 to 18 years old at the time of enrolment.

    Course duration: upto 50 weeks

    ON CAMPUS BOARDING

     

    The AIL MILC Campus offers a safe, comfortable, and enriching boarding experience for our students. Conveniently located in Melbourne’s beautiful Bayside area, just a two-minute walk from Gardenvale Station and close to tram and bus routes, MILC provides exceptional convenience and accessibility.

    The campus accommodates 46 students, with separate dormitory floors for boys and girls. A dedicated on-site kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, offering a balanced menu that blends traditional Asian cuisine with modern Australian dishes — ensuring our boarding students enjoy nutritious, high-quality meals with plenty of variety.

    To ensure students’ safety and wellbeing, MILC provides 24/7 care and supervision, with an on-site building manager and resident carers who live on campus.

    Students can relax and socialise in a range of recreational areas, including spaces for watching movies, reading, playing table tennis or pool, and enjoying board and card games. In addition, AIL organises a variety of extracurricular activities during the week and Saturday excursions, giving students opportunities to explore Melbourne’s rich culture, attractions, and community life.
